SÜSS Nándor (1848. 09. 25. - 1921. 04. 01.)
A Marburgban született német fiatalember1876-ban érkezett Kolozsvárra, hogy az egyetemen felállítandó Mechanikusi Állomást megszervezze. Az ott kialakított műhelyben kezdte el az egyetemi oktatáshoz és a kutatáshoz szükséges kísérleti eszközök készítését.
Süss kinevezését Eötvös Loránd ajánlotta, aki azután maga is tőle rendelte műszereit, Süss készítette többek között a később világhírűvé lett torziós ingáit is.
Pályáját nemzetközi díjak sora kísérte:
- 1897-ben a brüsszeli nemzetközi kiállításon az intézet termékei a Grand Prix-t nyerték el.
- 1900-ban a párizsi világkiállításon aranyéremmel díjazták az intézet geodéziai termékeit.
